If you’ve built your website using Squarespace, congratulations! You’re already on the right track to having a beautiful and professional-looking online presence. But your job isn’t done once your site is live. If you want people to actually find your website, you need to connect it to tools like Google Search Console and Google Analytics. These tools give you the insights you need to grow and improve your website over time.
In this blog, we’ll show you step-by-step how to connect your Squarespace website to both Google Search Console and Google Analytics. Don’t worry—no technical background is required. We’ll keep things simple and straightforward.
Why You Should Connect to Google Tools
Before we get into the steps, let’s quickly talk about why you should do this.
Google Search Console
This tool helps you understand how your website is performing in Google Search. You can see:
- Which keywords are people using to find your site
- How many clicks and impressions your pages are getting
- If there are any errors that are stopping your site from appearing in search results
Google Analytics
Google Analytics gives you detailed information about your visitors, such as:
- Where they’re coming from (social media, search, direct)
- Which pages do they visit most
- How long do they stay on your site
- What device are they using
Together, these tools help you make smart decisions that can boost your site traffic and conversions.
Step-by-Step Guide to Connecting Google Tools with Your Squarespace Website
Step 1: Create a Google Account
If you don’t already have a Google account, you’ll need to create one. Just go to accounts.google.com and follow the prompts. You’ll use this one account to access both Google Search Console and Google Analytics.
Step 2: Sign Up for Google Analytics
- Go to analytics.google.com.
- Click “Start measuring.”
- Enter your account name (this could be your business or website name).
- Under “Property Setup,” enter your website name and choose your time zone.
- Click Next, and fill in the relevant business info.
- Click Create, agree to the terms of service, and you’re in!
Step 3: Get Your Tracking ID
After setting up Google Analytics, you’ll receive a Tracking ID or a Measurement ID (starting with “G-”). This is what you’ll need to paste into your Squarespace site.
To find it:
- Go to your Google Analytics dashboard.
- Click on the Admin gear icon at the bottom left.
- Under “Property,” click Data Streams.
- Choose Web, and select your website.
- Copy the Measurement ID.
Step 4: Add Google Analytics to Your Squarespace Site
Now, log in to your Squarespace account and follow these steps:
- Go to your website dashboard.
- Click Settings → Advanced → External Services.
- Paste the Measurement ID into the Google Analytics field.
- Click Save.
That’s it! Your site is now connected to Google Analytics. It may take up to 24 hours for data to start appearing.
Step 5: Set Up Google Search Console
- Go to search.google.com/search-console.
- Click the “Start now” button.
- Under the “URL prefix” section, enter your full website URL (make sure to include https://).
- Click Continue.
Now, Google needs to verify that you own the site.
Step 6: Verify Your Website Ownership via HTML Tag
This part might sound technical, but don’t worry. It’s easy in Squarespace.
- After you click “Continue” in Search Console, you’ll see a list of verification methods.
- Choose the HTML tag method.
- Copy the <meta> tag Google provides (don’t worry, you won’t need to write code).
Now go back to Squarespace:
- In your Squarespace dashboard, click Settings → Advanced → Code Injection.
- In the Header field, paste the meta tag you copied.
- Click Save.
Go back to Google Search Console and click “Verify.”
If everything is correct, you’ll see a success message. If not, double-check that you pasted the code into the header and saved it.
Step 7: Submit Your Sitemap
A sitemap tells Google how your website is organised. Submitting one helps Google index your pages faster.
- In Google Search Console, go to the left-hand menu and click “Sitemaps.”
- Enter sitemap.xml after your domain name (e.g., www.yoursite.com/sitemap.xml).
- Click Submit.
Now Google knows where to find and crawl your pages.
Step 8: Monitor Your Site’s Performance
Once everything is connected, it’s time to sit back and watch the data roll in. Check your Google Analytics dashboard to see who’s visiting your site, where they’re coming from, and what they’re doing.
Visit Google Search Console to see which keywords are driving traffic, how your pages rank in search, and if there are any issues Google found.
This information helps you understand what’s working—and what’s not—so you can improve your site over time.
Ending Note
Connecting your Squarespace site to Google Search Console and Analytics might sound technical, but it’s actually very simple. It only takes a few minutes, and the insights you gain can make a big difference in your site’s success.
